Growing up in a conservative family in Indiana, Betsy Blankenbaker learned never to talk about sex. If her mother ever had to have a conversation about “IT,” she would whisper “down there” and point to the relevant body part. But when Blankenbaker, 53, hit her mid-40s, she decided to start researching sex and the body in the hope of reclaiming her own sensuality.

Sexual abuse at age 6 followed by a rape at the age of 40, combined with the loss of a child in childbirth, had left her feeling numb. “My entire genital area represented death to me,” said Blankenbaker. “I was disconnected from my body. I was not going to write about it.”

As she delved into her own sexuality and sensuality, Blankenbaker realized she had a book in her. That project grew into “O: The Autobiography of an Orgasm,” which in turn has led her to put together two anthologies of stories that people shared with her.
